![]() The Giver- Louis Lowery ***** Though this book falls into the young-adult category it still applies to and is relatable for adult readers. My first experience with Jonas and his life was in middle school when The Giver immediately became one of my favorite books. More recently, I reread the book to prepare for the release of the film. I loved the book just as much the second time as an adult reader as when I first read it some 10+ years ago (wow…talk about dating yourself). Jonas lives in a bubble, not in the literal sense but close. His community is one of Utopia. There is no anger, sadness, hurt or pain. At the age of 12 each child essentially becomes an adult and is given a job within the community. Jonas is selected to inherit the duty of “memory keeper.” This job is like no other and will leave Jonas questioning the Utopia in which he’s lived his entire life. Eradicated of any emotional depth, Jonas will dramatically alter the lives of those in his community, he will rattle their Utopia and provide them the greatest gift.
